Once Upon A Book. π
Once upon a book on a lowly bookshelf belonging to a family in a council flat.
Tell me something puts her arms around Still Thinking of You and Larger Than Life,
Still Thinking of You; Fancy seeing you two here!
The Rainmaker & Kiss the girls; (in unison) Just because your name is Tell me something doesn’t mean you should.
The Bride Price; Akα»₯nna is grudgingly allowed to continue her schooling but only because her ambitious uncle realises that an educated girl will fetch a higher bride price -
The Bluest Eye ; And twenty years later, I was still wondering about how one learns that. Who told her? Who had looked at her and found her so wanting, so small a weight on the beauty scale.
The Bride Price; Escape might be the answer but how can she escape her fear of the fate that even today, is said to await every girl whose bride price is not paid?
The Bluest Eye; Hang on, wait, what are you talking about? I’m a book and I’m about race, class, beauty standards and the consequences of ignorance. I’m hoping that that word Bride price is some sort of word play or the price one pays for being a worthy bride.”
“No, it’s quite simple. It’s about people annexing culture and traditions to personal greed.”
“That’s horrifying!”
“I know. That’s why I write about it.”
“Why would you write about something like that. You shouldn’t even mention that unless you’re a cow.”
“ The same reasons you write about standards of beauty.”
“I feel like we understand each other but are somehow misunderstanding each other.”
“I think so. Beauty standards vary from community to race to continent. There, I said it. One shouldn’t be imposed on a vast human race.”
“Culture and tradition is man attempting to walk with his family, ancestry and community but there’s paths one should walk alone.”
“Ties are great but there are times to sever them.”
“I wouldn’t sever ties with my creator though, she made me well.”
“Hug?”
“ We call it an embrace where I come from.”
Say You’re One Of Them ; They’re so noisy up there!”
Weep Not, Child; Can’t you keep them quiet up there?
Anthills Of The Savannah; They’re just having a conversation.
Olaudah Equiano; You would too if you were separated by Oceans and ships over centuries. Leave them alone!
Tell Me Something; And you’re still sure about that?
