Maia’s Red roses.
Single parenthood is a situation that occurs when someone makes a decision to leave a relationship or the decision is made for them. Sometimes, it happens when someone dupes a hapless teen into having the sex they were or weren’t prepared for. I grew up in a society where people have grown to realise that the person is a resource so when one family tosses a single, pregnant girl out for letting herself down, another family takes her in because the resource happens to be bringing another resource with her; Even better.
Of course, if it’s a man, he was just sowing his wild oats but the woman, how dare you. Why would you just go and let yourself and us down like this?
I witnessed one of these pregnant teenagers getting pimped out by her new family for change till she had to run away from there, impoverished also and leaving her children behind. We thought, what a barbaric practice! It should be abolished! But as you grow, the more you see. Education is the key.
Another such pregnant woman raised her own son to toddlerhood in the family that married her, knowing fully well that she was free to leave after she’d had the baby as if its some kind of surrogacy. The mother and daughter who’d married her, respectfully asked her to stay on afterwards as they liked having her around but she told them she’d made up her mind to leave and marry a guy afterwards. They were well off and kind and she gave them the one thing they didn’t have. So it was done and dusted.
The first family was a poor widow and her teenage girl wife.
The second was a rich widow supported by her understanding daughter who was about the same age as wifey. The mother lost her husband and their only son in tragic circumstances. She married a pregnant woman in her twenties.
And of course there’s the people who think that she’s fair game because she’s fallen from grace so getting a job or an apartment for herself becomes an uphill task. Then there was the little Catholic, pregnant girl who was too horrified for words to find herself in that condition but when the family who took her in for their son, told her to discreetly take as many lovers as she desired from the neighbourhood to produce more children so their child could fit in with his peers. She indiscreetly reported them to the village elders who ruled that she could leave the place asap with or without her family’s approval. This little, timid, horrified, young woman became α»kα»₯ na-agba α»zara, the village disciplinarian. Be yourself. Be kind. That’s all I’m saying.
