π Wangari Muta Maathai, a Kenyan environmentalist, the first to be awarded a doctorate in Biological sciences and a professorship in Anatomy at the University of Nairobi. The 52 year old environmentalist organised the Green Belt Movement in 1977. She has been able to motivate 50,000 women, school children and the disabled to plant trees to fight soil erosion.

She has gone on to win the Nobel Peace prize and other awards since this publication. The first African woman to do so.
